Tour to El Teniente mine and Sewell

sewell_1

El Teniente is the world's biggest underground copper mine.

In half a century of activity, Sewell went from being a copper mining camp to a full-blown city. Founded in 1906, just over 50 years ago it was inhabited by 15,000 people and had become a model place with a cinema, the best hospital in the region, and a planned geometrical layout for its houses.

During the last third of the twentieth century Sewell was uninhabited, until in August 1998 when the former camp was declared a National Monument in the "Typical and Scenic Area of the Libertador O'Higgins region.

It is known as the city of staircases, and those staircases are high, as the town is located 2,200 meters above sea level. Its main characteristic speaks with eloquence: it is the largest underground copper mine in the world.

The international recognition of Sewell’s superior attraction came in 2006, when Unesco declared it a World Heritage Site. For visits, it is recommended that you get in touch with one of the authorized companies listed. Contact us!!!

cape1horn_lakutaia

The Navarino Island is located south of the Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, its main towns are Puerto Williams, Puerto Navarino province capital, Caleta Eugenia and Puerto Toro.
The vegetation that surrounds the Navarino Island is in general much nurtured, with landscapes embellished with mountains, forests and tundra. One of the most famous strolls of this patagonic island is the trekking circuit that is done in the cordón Dientes de Navarino, during this journey it is possible to observe the beautiful landscapes that the NavarinoIsland has to offer.
Regarding the flora of the place, specifically in the Northern extreme of the Navarino Island, we can observe a kind ofMagellanic deciduous forest, where the most characteristic species are the Lenga Beech, Antarctic Beech, Coihue and of coursethe Magellanic tundra. South of the Navarino Island is the wet evergreen Magellanic forest, the reason of the particularity of this vegetation, is mainly due to the great amount of precipitations in this area. Lastly another one of the area is the Andean desert, this area has no trees or high bushes, and there is even an area where the vegetation is nonexistent.
South of the Windhond Lake you can observe vegetation mostly made up of tundra and forests. However, from the Betinelli hill there are other landscapes you can observe, such as the cordón Dientes de Navarino, cordillera Darwin, Isla HosteandCape Horn, are some of the places the tourists visit when they are on the Navarino Island.
Another one of the attractions of the Navarino Island is the Omora Ethnobotanical Park, located at just 4 km. from Puerto Williams; the beauty of the forest in miniature of this park is what makes it one of the greatest natural heritages of the Patagonia. This microscopic world is made up of moss, hepatica and lichens that are developed in the bark of the trees.
The weather north from the Navarino Island where Puerto Williams is located, has medium precipitation levels with a temperature of 6º C. the temperature extremes are 9,6º C the hottest month and 1,9º C the coldest month, the rain are distributed during the whole year and during periods we can also observe snow.
How to get to the Navarino Island
There are two ways to get to the Navarino Island; one of them is by sea between Punta Arenasand Puerto William. In this case you set sail in the sector of Tres Puentes, but only once a week. The sailing duration depends on the weather conditions, but usually its 35 hours and the other option is by regular flights in light aircraft from the city of Punta Arenas.
