In 2011, Santiago was ranked as the third cheapest metropolis in South America, as determined by the Prices and Earnings study of Swiss investment bank UBS.

Chile's capital appeared in the 59th place among 73 urban centers, ranked from most to least expensive, cheaper than Sao Paulo (19), Rio de Janeiro (26), Caracas (47), and Bogota (57), exceeded only by Lima (65) and Buenos Aires (68).

The poll, which placed Mexico City at #64, measured the accumulated inflation, output growth, and variations in the exchange rate, as customary since 2006.

Based on the cost of a basket of 122 goods and services that responds to the habits of consumers in Western Europe, UBS ranked Oslo, Zurich and Geneva as the most expensive cities in the world.

The index also included other great cities and conurbations such as Tokyo (6), Sydney (7), Toronto (9), Paris (12), New York (14), London (15), Rome (23), Barcelona (25), Madrid (30), Berlin (33), Milan (34), and Miami (41).

On a wages scale, Santiago was ranked #56, the fourth highest level in Latin America, behind the two mega-cities of Brazil and the capital of Colombia, while in purchasing power it was ranked #56, surpassing Caracas (62) and Mexico City (70).
